Hudak Takes on Leadership Role in Dynamic Financial Services Industry

Niagara West – Glanbrook MPP Tim Hudak is the Critic of Financial Services in the Ontario PC Party’s shadow cabinet in the Ontario Legislative Assembly, which resumed Monday, September 14, 2015.

“Financial Services is one of the largest employers in the Province of Ontario, and a growing and dynamic sector” says Hudak, noting credit unions in both Niagara and Hamilton are some of the largest employers in his riding of Niagara West – Glanbrook.

Financial Services, which includes credit unions, insurance, mortgages, stocks and the stock market, mutual funds and the Ontario Securities Commission, has traditionally been under the portfolio of the Finance Critic.  As a dedicated and senior critic to the sector, Hudak said he is looking forward to exploring the opportunities that exist within financial services and how those opportunities translate into more financial security and a better quality of life for all Ontarians.

“This sector can help lead Ontario’s economic recovery. I’m looking to build a strategy around attracting more high-paying jobs to banking, investment and financial advisory services,” said Hudak, who as PC Leader had a clear-eyed focus on jobs and economic recovery as well as responsible government spending.

“With our awesome talent, Ontario can be an international leader in financing infrastructure,” said Hudak, who is already hard at work in his new role. This is not the first economic portfolio the local MPP has held.

First elected as MPP in 1995, Hudak was appointed to Cabinet in three successive economic portfolios: Northern Development and Mines, where he cut mining taxes to the lowest in Canada; Tourism, Culture and Recreation, where he executed a plan to help these industries recover from the September 11th attacks; and Consumer and Business Services, where he took action to protect vulnerable seniors by overhauling outdated consumer protection laws.

Hudak earned an Economics degree from the University of Western Ontario, and was subsequently awarded a full academic scholarship to the University of Washington, where he obtained his Master of Arts in Economics
