MPP Tim Hudak Joins Lincoln Residents in Opposition to Bio-Solid Facility

QUEEN’S PARK – After meeting with his constituents regarding a proposed bio-solids storage facility in the Town of Lincoln, MPP Tim Hudak took the case directly to Minister of Environment Glen Murray this week.

Hudak agrees with local residents that the agricultural landscape of Lincoln is not the place for bio-solid storage lagoons on land zoned for agriculture; that Lincoln was right to turn down the re-zoning application that would allow the facility in Beamsville; and that the storage of waste poses a health and environmental concern.

“Provincially, we regulate the use of this material on farm fields and the short-term storage of waste for individual farm use, but there’s nothing on the books regulating massive, long-term facilities such as the one being proposed for Beamsville,” said Hudak. “I’ve asked Minister Murray to put a stop to this proposal.”

“This type of facility does not belong adjacent to homes, next to provincially protected wetlands, close to prime agricultural lands or anywhere near a park where children play,” said Hudak.

Even though the proposal from Shire Corporation has been rejected by Town Council, Hudak says the residents are right to continue raising their voices against the project because Shire has appealed the Town’s decision to the Ontario Municipal Board.

Bio-solids, often referred to as “sludge” is the solid, human waste left over at the end of the sewage treatment process.

“The sludge does need to go somewhere but I agree with residents that there needs to be some sort of environmental protection in place regarding how close the sludge can be stored to homes or wetlands or parks, or on land zoned for agricultural use,” said Hudak.

Hudak added that Minister Murray was very receptive to Hudak’s concerns and would be looking into the matter.
